Use a mesh shirt/fabric with thick webbing. Paint and set the light color, pull on the shirt, then sponge the dark paint over it. Pull it off carefully, touch up/add any spots, then set the paint.

You can usually find these shirts at Ragstock, american apparel, and sometimes dance and party stores. Pic related, it's what I'm talking about.
