I feel like I'd be horribly embarrassed if I was dressed as a character without playing the game/reading the comic and having someone come up to me and try to talk about the series. What do people even say in those kind of situations?

That being said, I'm not going to waste money on a character I don't care about just because they look cool. That's not why I joined this hobby.

Quite sad. You can find 4chan and make a thread about your ignorance but you can't google 'cosplay commissioners' and shop around.

That, by definition, is stealing. You don't have to physically take something from someone else to be considered a thief. If that logic were true, then people who steal identities on the internet are just "data collectors" manipulating info when people accidentally send it to them through malware or cookies.
