I guess people let their egos go to their heads and look to be reassured and asspatted all the time. Any little thing can set off someone who thinks they walk on water, especially if you aren't treating them like Jesus right off the bat. I've seen it happen to nice people, in particular those mediocre in their field yet surrounded by low-tier people. That will make you feel important.
