Seconding the makeup bit. I'd probably tone it down. The only harsh makeup I see would be typical of gothic styles, but it was sort of done in the most 90s way ever.

You could also put your hair into braids which can be left down or worn up like this. If not, then maybe you can consider the hime-cut (which can be worn in addition to your braids) which is synonymous with old-school looks.
