I think I'm quite lucky when it comes to irl fans that I know, even though most of them are "shipping fujoshi", they aren't tumblr obcessive shit, they just happen to enjoy the pairings and behave like normal human beings. I've heard way too many cringe-y stories from other people though and the tumbr fandom scares the shit out of me.
My advice is to ignore the tumblr fags and strike conversation with the little few that are decent, many times they'll end up introducing you to other fans who are decent as well and you could make some cool friends. At least that was what happened with me, through one or two people at a con, I got to know several other more and last year we held a YP meet that was pretty chill and fun.
