actually from what i know, charity stores aren't really a thing. i think some stores (like spank, etc) make money off of used clothing, but i know for things like furniture, electronics, appliances, they just got thrown away. like even giving someone a used item is considered rude, i think? there's a group of people who go around and will take still-working things from the trash at times when people are sleeping.
this is stuff i learned in a japanese culture and society class i took last year from my professor who lived in japan for a while, so it could be totally wrong and/or out of date so please correct me if so!
