see, the parents being stupid abusive assholes wouldn't be a problem in either a writing or message standpoint if it was clearly framed as child neglect, abuse and toxic to elsa's development within the narrative. But after elsa's vaguely angry look at the crown when repeating her father's 'conceal don't feel' mantra in 'let it go', the parents or elsa's feelings towards them were never mentioned again, neither by elsa nor anybody else. hell anna basically forgets she's an orphan after the snowman montage. forget messages, that's perfectly good character development trashed.
