Ah yea, I kinda had in mind what you are writing about as IMHO 2000s were times when IKEA (and it's clones) took off for good internationally as way of filling rented spaces for cheap .

There also been a very short lived trend for black colored interiors in the late 80's - very early 90's. But I know it mostly from interior design magazines I saw in my deep childhood.

As for darkwood it's currently not that hard to find on e-bay or similar services 2nd hand pieces at relatively friendly prices. It also seems to be back into more mainstream designs especially art-deco/bauhaus/loft inspired. So you can do some experimentation in mixing different styles.

And there are also full blown huge ass massive XIX century complete furniture sets of darkwood bedrooms/cabinets if you smell like a serious cash. In my country they mostly come from Germany. But most of us are too pleb to afford them. Ehh...

I would like to once again mention wrought black iron stuff - like for example pixrel that you can use as standing flowerbed or keep more representative shoe exposition on it. Or whatever else.
