Not quite sure if I'm understanding the question correctly, but you're probably best off making it the way the tutorial does, and then taking the pattern in from there. When I made it I mocked everything up out of spare newspaper and then took some of the extra out in the shoulders, sides, and then using a dart from the breast area to the under arm and another in the center front. I don't think there was any change to the back other than evening out what was taken from the shoulders and underarms.
