There's a lot of places you can try but they're very hit and miss. A lot of it is super overpriced ebay or Taobao, plus you'll mainly find ankle and crew length socks.
It's really one big treasure hunt so you need to persist with it and go in with an open mind. Here's the places I frequent:

>Dangerfield
>Target
>Rubi Shoes/Cotton On
>Department stores (Myer and David Jones sometimes get interesting things)
>Socks stands in shopping centres
>Those odd artsy consignment shops and artist markets
>Forever 21, Topshop, H&M
>Equip
>Alternate fashion stores
