I had a similar idea for the Z-ring that I was gonna make out of thin craft foam. My idea is going to be using super magnets on the inside of the foam to lock the ends together. That way you can easily take it on and off when you need to and it will fit on snug. Super magnets are great for cosplay and are underrated as fuck. They're the tiny little things you can get from like home depot.

Alternatively build it on top of a sweat band or an elastic band you so can slip it on and off.
