I mainly do portrait brooch things, but same concept applies. I use glossy photo paper, and seal the edges were I cut with modpodge. I can trust the main glossy surface not to have any bleeding. Not sure if it's true of every brand, but my printer is an inkjet type, and I'm using Epson brand paper if that helps.
