When you're up against shit like this it's not saying much - sure characters like Stocking and Kuroneko are *better* but if their outfits were real, they wouldn't be good. Just like the posted Stocking cosplay. Which was the whole fucking point.

As the other two people have said, lurk more and use Google to see photos of real people wearing it. There are also archives of the Gothic Lolita Bible if you want to go into old school.

One thing I recommend NOT doing is using fanservice illustrations of "your favorite anime/manga characters in a lolita outfit". Oftentimes the artists or anime teams have no experience whatsoever in lolita fashion, and then end up making ita monstrosities. Here is an example of such a monstrosity. There are a small number of professional manga artists and illustrators who are familiar with the fashion and draw good lolita coords (we even have art threads for them once in a while), but it's difficult for a beginner of the fashion to tell the difference of what is and is not ita, and when the image is an illustration rather than a photo of a real person, there is an additional layer of difficulty. Start with studying real life coords first, then venture into drawing it.

OMG the Haruhi lolita designs. I guess these kinda work as idol costumes and the artist even knows about skirt length but they're amazing ugly otherwise. Mikuru's isn't even lolita more like visual kei
