Because it's predominantly inhabited by girls in their late teens and early 20s who either never grew out of the highschool socialization phase or have some kind of social retardation or outright disability. This combined with anonymity turns most of /cgl/ into a collection of catty, sociopathic, backbiting bitches.

The majority of cosplayers are female. The majority of cosplayers are young(er). It's no surprise then that /cgl/ as a community is petty to the extreme, especially when it comes to "competition." It has always been this way.
