Ugh yes. When I was five or six my parents got me a kitten and I loved the shit out of that animal, which to my family apparently translates as "Anons loves cats, buy her cat-themed items forever!". I'm 21 now, and I have 30+ little cat statues. FAMILY, STOP.

In fact, all of the 'adults' in my life (family, old schoolteachers, parents' friends and colleagues) don't seem to understand that I've matured since being twelve years old or so. They still think that I'm a little mallgoth, that I want to become a mangaka, that I want to move to Japan. I guess the artsy little surly weeb is such an endearing stereotype that they refuse to let go of it.
Now that I'm actually working on getting myself properly edumacadated and planning for an internship in a different country, they're acting like I betrayed them by not telling them what was going on in my life. No, you just weren't listening!

Also my mum tells everyone I speak Japanese and can sew like a professional seamstress. I wish she'd brag about things I'm actually good at rather than things I wished I were good at when I was 12, but oh well.
