They'd crossdress to sneak into combat as a regular soldier, for myriad reasons. They would serve as espionage (and not just the lol prostitute kind). There is the problem that a lot of them aren't written about, or treated as mythology (cf Molly Pitcher), but they exist and did exist and will exist.
