I can relate to this.

My entire family is American but I lived in Saudia Arabia most of my life due to my dads job. After 9/11 we were forced to move back.

I was in middle school at the time and my one mistake was telling them where I had been. Kids are vicious when they see someone or something that doesn't fit in with the group so I got picked on a lot. Eventually I changed my story and told everyone I had been living in a less extreme country (Ireland) and they still picked on me. This went on for a while until I realized that people were going to mess with you just because they can.

Even now I'm in Uni and I have trouble keeping my stories straight out of habit, but it has made me rather adept at lying to people, so I guess that is a plus.
