Sorry gulls, I did not mean to insinuate that western jfash wearers were trying to appeal to guys. I can understand the frustration. I was referring to Japanese girls in my post. And by "toned down enough for guys", I mean "toned down enough to be generally societally acceptable". Forgive me for I was drunkposting in the early morning.

Many Japanese men are obsessed with the idea of purity and innocence, and some girls take advantage of this by dressing overly cute using brands considered otome. These girls are referred to as 清楚系ビッチ which means more or less "neat/tidy-kei slut". Pic related.

That's only one use for those brands though, the other would be a more casual/cheaper lolita style, which aligns more with what the west considers to be otome-kei. I think the west should stop calling it otome-kei and just call it casual lolita. All the coord pics posted in >>9216248 look like lolita to me. I'm guessing the western lolita/otome split came as a result of people being anal about petticoats and stuff.

I think I conflated my ideas of what the west considers otome-kei with some related but not quite the same Japanese phenomena, and ruffled some feathers in the process. I apologize. Consider the otome-kei I was referring to as the Japanese amalgamation of cutesy fashion, not the western concept of casual lolita. I think lolita and otome-kei are wonderful and I don't mean to discourage anyone who likes them. I probably should have made a new thread about "how j-fash is seen in Japan" or something instead of derailing this one. I'll stop now <3
