Pretty much this, to be honest I think most prints that you find in fabric shops are unsuitable for lolita bar the simple stripes, florals etc.
All of the good hand made I've seen has been done with plain colour fabrics e.g >>6929301 and pic related

Oh hello we talked the other day!
I think it depends where you do your diploma - my college has a retail focus so we have to take units on Fashion Marketing, Professional Practice and Fashion Retail however it's definitely not the number crunching you would need to start a business.
A lot of the students on my course, I would say around 2/3 have poor to mediocre sewing skills and the year before us produced such poor work that they cancelled the fashion show. I was speaking with my practical tutor last week and she told me that she regularly receives work which she knows that students haven't made because they're not produced the way garments are made in this country or the garment is made absolutely perfectly despite the student doing fuck all in lessons - yet these students will still pass because our college is desperate to keep the exam results up
Design skills aren't much better either yet they all think they're going CSM and will be the next Alexander McQueen

When I went to visit Nottingham Trent the costume students work was very poor and all the nice (but still defective) garments turned out to be made my the theatre design students, shits weird

I'd like this too.
I really want some indie brand that focuses on design features and construction rather than having a print on a fabric - like this dress
