Having fought against sca and in live steel against said mass weapons any sort of armor beyond bare skin is proof against most of the tactics used in the sca.

A suit of full plate armor and proper padding can make you pretty much invulnerable to swords and cutting attacks and the mace will only batter you around unless you have shitty untempered armor.
