I sell prints and it really just depends on the photographer.
I went to a studio of a really well known photography team in the area and we had a really long shoot for two different costumes. They picked three images from 500 and edited them (here's one) and let me have all of them, edited or not to do what I pleased with them. I edited a few more and asked them about selling prints and they were more than okay with it, said the images were mine, just credit was fine.
Then there is a really excellent photographer I have worked with for years who has been getting lots of requests for prints from her subjects and is waiting until she works up a decent contract so neither party can screw each other over.
And still another photographer I work with just has me buy them discounted ($4, I sell them for $10)from him each time I sell one.
The guy I've worked with most recently just charged me the cost of printing and let me sell what he printed up, but I think that was because I was at his booth at a con promoting his work.

It really just depends on who you work with, but make sure if you are going into the shoot with the intention of selling the results, you discuss it with the photographer FIRST. Never sell prints without discussing it with the other half that helped make the image.

As far as how I feel about it... well obviously I've said I sell them. I feel like unless you are "big" enough, you won't consistently sell enough to "pull it off", or make some sort of decent profit. People wanting to do this forget about printing costs, shipping costs, etc. Its worked out okay for me, but I tend to only sell prints at cons when its easier to be a sleazy used car salesman or when I post about it on my page frequently. And that gets annoying as hell both to me and the people who interact with my page.
