Personally I think if it's a dress you're planning on keeping it, it's your dress you bought with your own money, then I don't see a problem. I know some people get sad when seeing "their precious brand" get cut up, but if they don't own that dress then it's not their business.

I recently bought an Innocent World apron skirt and the waist is comical, so I bought it planning to open the side seem and turn it into an actual apron (with an open back) I'm just not sure if I should buy extra fabric to make straps to be able to tie the skirt pieces together in a bow or if I should just use the buttons to criss-cross the straps in the back like pic related but with the gap.
