I think it's partially zeitgeist as well. The current LARP mood all together is a lot less geek-nerdy and comes far closer to a lot of people bringing together their creative hobbies. Atleast, in my experience as a young LARPer. I can't speak about how it was in the olden times, although I did play with a pretty 90's styled event and it was fun as well.

It just felt a lot more like real-life DnD than anything else though.

And maybe, just maybe, this zeigeist will strike in the US as well. And if it doesn't, well I guess that means the majority of people is still having fun this way. And although I'd like to, in the end, I don't feel honest judging people having fun.
