Well, the game was not about battling at all, so it made more sense for the characters (who were travellers rather than soldiers) to carry a more travel-convenient buckler than a fuckhuge shield just because muh combat minmaxing.

Pic related, I made a few bucklers like on >>9362236 out of foam PVC, plastazote foam and latex using my steel buckler as a mold for heat shaping.
