I think it would look cute if you just diffused or air-dried the bulk, but took a straightener through the fringe. The combination of straight with super curly is definitely present in j-fashion. I'll post an example or two, but it is hard to find Japanese examples. They usually have to use a curling iron to get curly hair, and it's never quite the same compared to natural. I picked the messiest example I could easily find. If you have trouble getting it to hold... it's really expensive, but it is heaven-sent concerning hold and smoothing power: try Oribe's Royal Blowout spray on the fringe, and use a super huge round-brush. (I'm talking maybe a 4-inch round brush.) Often, that will make it hold without the need to even use a flat iron, but you could still use the iron to get that pin-straight effect. It wouldn't require the amount of effort it would take to blow-out your whole head.
