For sure! Something like this is a nice DIY project because you get to sort of explore what 'feels right' for the character you are making... maybe the staff is particularly old or was damaged in battle and that's why it looks the way it does etc etc.
Looking around on other sites there are a lot of different DIY approaches people take but they all are pretty inexpensive! It can take away from the fear of "messing up" if you're not having to spend a ton of money on each attempt.
