I think it's the same principle of building a lolita wardrobe in general (finding a favorite piece and working your wardrobe around it with basics), but sticking with more simpler styled pieces (minimal to no print)which you can find references to on lolibrary or hellolace by year. The outdated guides on lj might come in handy because they'll say things like investing in a pair of rocking horse shoes and knee socks, and I remember DIY was really big back then, even among Japanese lolitas (refer to Avant Gauche). You can also find inspiration in old FRUiTS scans (I think the book still exists).

Common old school pieces (from my understanding and experience):

>Blouses with detachable sleeves
>plain and ladder lace skirts
>knee high socks
>platform shoes, including RHS and mary jane platforms - usually black, even in sweet coords
>(empire waistlined) jsks and OPs with non-printed embellishments
-lace, ruffles, embroidery
>traditional headdresses, alice bands, mini top hats

I think you'll have a lot of luck finding unwanted older pieces for cheap on places like mbok and the Japanese yahoo auctions.

jfc, so much Kate. I know it's plain, but I've always liked it.
