I sold all the rest of my plate pretty recently- it's all I have left! The reason you're seeing a lot of gorget+spaulders is that it's very popular in fantasy art. It gives it a look of armor, but then the artist doesn't have to bother drawing a full kit over and over or worry about the bulkiness of armor messing with the design. They are also fairly cheap and pretty much look nice no matter what.
Or at least that's the modern explanation, there may be a historical reason for it, I don't really know. I like having my neck kinda-protected.
Rules-wise it's 100% for decoration, I'm getting a full suit worth of armor points with magic, I just wanna wear what little armor I have left.

I adore those books, and I hadn't considered it before now but it may have been a subconscious inspiration. I designed it to be the 'uniform' of a diplomatic assistant (plus training armor) from the embassy of the land before it was destroyed. I'm the missing brother of another player's character for the post-apoc campaign. The markings are a thing the other player started up as markings around their village and the surrounding area. Blue marks are for your profession (though peasants and farmers don't bother, it's really only people with trained skills or noble positions deserving of respect), the red line indicates the number of times you've resurrected so your village knows if they should be careful with you because you're near permanent death. Black marks indicate personal shames, but aren't like admissions of guilt, it's like a personal acknowledgement and atonement for things you have done wrong.
I have so many pages of lore... The staff is going to hate me.
