So, it's just a question of the source quality? A lot of the problems you mentioned can be eliminated if you look for vector stock art instead of trying to clean up a low res raster image, you'd at least be able to ungroup objects and delete backgrounds more easily. It's not going to be a walk in the park, but it's a lot easier than drawing it from scratch, particularly if you don't need the artwork to be arranged in a scene (so the lighting doesn't matter as much).

The only thing you need to watch out for the licensing, as free vector art is almost always free for non commercial use only, but that shouldn't matter for one dress for yourself, and you have the option of buying vector art with commercial use license.

I'm really more curious if there's a stigma against artwork that was produced this way, because the person "producing" the print is not the person who drew it, although they may have taken a lot of effort in arranging the artwork so that it looks nice on the dress.
