I think the idea of the print was the appeal of those old botanical artists like Maria Sibylla Merian. All the pictures people have been posting talking about it ( >>7602476 >>7603013 >>7603096 ) have been illustrations, not photographs.

It'd make sense to use photos as a reference, since those original illustrations were done with a pinned butterfly at their side. I don't mean to imply that they should be drawing from memory.
