I feel like knowing what works with your skin tone helps. I do see a lot of jewel toned items in otome, which probably explains the appeal of it to classic lolitas who want to transition to casual, yet cute wear, but pastels can come up sometimes.

It might be an odd suggestion, but I think Kate Spade has a lot of great ideas for putting together an otome wardorbe/outfit. They tend to use classic patterns (namely polkadots and stripes) and "spring" colors. .
