This is >>7325663 again but since you mentioned blackface... aside from all the crap stories I've heard about my local SCA, one time I decided to research for myself anyway, I was on a mailing list where some white lady was asking what kind of makeup she should use to darken her skin to make her middle eastern/north african (I forget which, it was years ago) persona more accurate. I kinda u-turned outta there at that point. (I've never seen evidence to suggest that sort of thing is usual in the SCA and I know people have personas that do and don't match their mundane ethnicities/backgrounds/whatever, don't worry.)
