I found that if I wanted to use actual HEMA technique with a greatsword in LARP, the most effective and safest way to go about it was to use the sword mostly like pic related. It helps keep the blade away from heads so idiots don't hurt themselves on it, and works quite well for defensive fighting. You can still get some nice reach out of it too.
