You seem to be capable of introspection and self crit, so you probably have nothing to worry about. Nayrt but I've seen so many 'seamstresses' in my comm who get a big head because people who've never been in the same room with a sewing machine compliment their work, and consider themselves above any and all criticism or advice. Then they get it into their heads to start selling their stuff, find out that nobody wants to pay brand prices for it, and flounce, calling the entire community elitist brandwhores in the process. I love sewing and talking about sewing with other lolitas but the majority of lolitas who sew have no idea what they're doing and see any kind of advice as a personal attack. Not too long ago I was quietly trying to figure out why the scallops on a girl's handmade JSK looked so lumpy, and it turned out she didn't clip her 1" seam allowance. When I told her it was super easy to fix and improve the overall look of her scallops, she and her friends acted like I was bullying her. FFS, I was just trying to help her un-lump her hemline, but if she prefers to stew in her puckered hems and unpressed seams that's her choice, I guess.

Trying to dissuade them from using non-lolita fabrics is even harder, because for many of them looking "unique" is more important than looking good. At least one girl I know is stuck with several dresses made out of orange novelty tablecloth with neon green skulls because even the friends who gushed over her work aren't actually prepared to spend burando prices to look like shit, Halloween or not.

>random curtain fabric
>waistline too low
>pleats not aligned with princess seams
>wrong lace color
>no lace around the bib part
>no belt

This is so sad looking.

Any sewing machine suggestions for a beginner in cosplay? Brand suggestions? Is a 17 stitch good enough for now or will I outgrow it too fast? Will I be able to get anything done or is it more practical to purchase a 25 or 37 stitch? Also any other advice or suggestions pertaining to beginner sewing supplies. Any blogs or youtubers I should look to for tutorials?

Why do so many people put an entire dress together before trying to hem it?

I can't think of anything that would be more frustrating.

Nnngh. I wasn't sure whether to ask this here or in the handmade thread.

I just shipped out a bunch of orders (Handmade, obviously.) and only as I got to the post office did I realize that I'd have to make the decision between marking them as merchandise (more professional as a store) or as gifts (potentially saving customers a ridiculous amount of money on customs.)

All of my items are wrapped in tissue paper with a small enveloped "Thank you for your support! Please enjoy." letter and then gift-wrapped. They look 100% like gifts.

I know that a lot of people prefer marking as gift on pre-owned purchases, but would that turn people away from a store for a lack of professionalism, or even seeming shady? Should I just leave an option at checkout?
I ended up marking all of this lot as merchandise with accurate value, but a few went to Europe and I'll feel awful if they got large charges.

This just makes me feel really sad.

I want to genuinely help people like this, because they're obviously young and really enjoy what they're doing. They'll never improve without help and honesty. But then they turn around and get so sassy and rude about it, like they genuinely believe that they're already too god for you.

I want to be nice and encouraging but they just make it so hard.

This is cute but it makes me cringe a little because the dress would be off grain...
