I remember reading this book, pic related, as a kid where the illustrations became really weird the more you looked into the details. Things looked all right from a distance but the more you looked the more strange creatures in the details you'd find. MC sort of reminds me of that concept.

I'd fucking kill to have this as a print any day, but that's another topic for another thread
