Your hair just has to be long. I understand what you are saying about the proportions. As a stylist, it basically means we are suppose to say 'that'd look horrible' when big girls with long hair ask, 'Would this shoulder length/pixie/a-line bob style look cute on me?'.

If you get bangs, try to go for longer side swept bangs. You could do the straight across bangs, but there's a fine line between cutting them too short. Wispy straight cut bangs that fall right below the eyebrows can look good. Heavy straight cut bangs that sit right out/above the eyebrow will reveal the worst of features.

Also, make sure they cut it properly. The area they should be cutting only extends from the end of one eyebrow to the other, this will leave plenty of long hair around the temples and cheeks. Many hairdressers accidentally cut too far into the sides of the head and remove this part, revealing the sides of the face too much. This pictures shows what I'm talking about, this hairdresser cut the hair past the end of the eyebrow. Don't do this, not even with side bangs.
