Accessories:
-Don’t pile on a ton and instead, go for a few polished-looking ones that are well-placed.
-Trade in chunky, plastic jewelery for delicate pieces.
-Avoid handbags shaped like anything other than a handbag.

Feet and Legs:
-Shoes with delicate heels are more low-key than chunky ones with bubble toes.
-Keep your shoes so they match your handbag.
-Wear shoes in ‘normal’ colors (ie colors that you can easily find in a department store; red, black, brown, etc.)
-Tights--or OTKs that look like tights, bare legs or short socks look ‘best’ with toned-down sweet lolita.

General Tips:

-Don’t pile on too many colors. Save matching your blouse, tights and wig with your dress for those OTT times. Same goes for bringing out other colors in a print.
-Keep the outfit ‘balanced’. Just like matching your shoes and handbag makes you look more put-together, the same goes for your blouse and socks.
-Carrying a motif or theme through an outfit always makes it look great, but try doing it subtly. Most of the time, OTT lolita carries the main theme (ie. rabbits, candy, unicorns). Having a unicorn charm on a necklace or bracelet is fine, but don’t go overboard. That’s about as far as it should go. Instead, bring out smaller details. Does the print of your dress have pearls? Is it trimmed in gold or silver? Is their pretty white lace? Cute pink bows? Those are all details you can focus on and choose to carry through the outfit, too. ‘This dress has a military/princess/etc.' feel to it is a good starting point for making coords, too.
-When I’m going for toned-down sweet, I tend to think more like I’m putting together a ‘normal’ outfit than a lolita coord. I really think it helps me curb my OTT tendencies.
-When in doubt, go for pieces that have classic lolita sensibilities, but plenty of sweet details.

Good comparison!

Oh I'm not denying that fashion isn't an ephemeral thing. It just seems like certain prints rise and die in popularity a quicker rate than "normal" fashion trends. I think it's more exaggerated because Lolita is an incredibly niche market. And since this type of trend is centered around a print (specifically boarder prints), that's bound to shorten its shelf life, too. Especially when brands release several prints in a season. That's why I think it's more like collecting to some people.
