having worked in wedding alterations before, take it from me:

if y'all get your dress and want something cute and quirky done to it and can't do it yourself, nine times outta ten it's gonna look like hot garbage AND everyone in alterations will make fun of you for it as soon as you leave the building.

That being said you'll probably also be the most interesting thing that's happened to the poor souls in the alterations department that month, so don't let the potential mocking dissuade you.
