I've seen some people cut out strips and glue/sew them on like pic related, but many people suggest buttonholes too. They definitely look much better when the ribbon is actually laced through.

I'm making a similar pair of sleeves and am wondering how can I make them stay up while looking loose at the top? Should I sew an arm warmer inside? Pic related seems to have done something like that (you can see something peeking out the top of her right sleeve) but I can't envision how to do it without making the top look gathered.
