It embodies lolita fashion to me. It's incredibly girly and dolly but can also have just enough edge to it to have that dark or gothic look (obviously this doesn't apply to sweeter coords, but still).

I love it. It's a really fun movie if I am being honest I probably would have enjoyed this movie even if it wasn't based around a lolita. I'm a sucker for unlikely friendships and shenanigans that follow.

I prefer buying older pieces, but I do also like newer ones since I tend to just buy what I like opposed to buying things specifically because they are a certain substyle. I'd love to make my own, but I don't know how/where to start and whenever I try to figure out how I get too intimated by small basics.

Not if I can't work out/lose enough weight to fit into it comfortably. And I don't know how to alter things and I don't know anyone reliable enough to properly alter things to another size so I wouldn't risk it.

When I was a young teenage weeb. As you can imagine, it did not go well.

Very simple. Skin tint, eyeliner, mascara, blush, eyebrow gel, and darker berry colored lipsticks.

I agree with this 100%! The thing that has always struck me about old school (even sweet) is the very haughty, cold "Yes I'm beautiful, but not for you" aura. Like 'look, but don't touch.'
Huge platform heels or rocking-horse shoes, intimidating poofy skirt, dark lipstick and angry eyebrows for gothic, vacant feminine eyes and disinterested demeanor for sweet, large clunky parasols, etc.
Even the just in terms of the space the fashion takes up, in Japan where everybody is packed together like sardines it's kind of a "Fuck you, you're going to deal with my petticoat and parasol whether you like it or not. Try not to knock my headbow out of place, while you're at it."

kek I didn't see the context of this image before I opened it and I thought it was commenting on the shoe/tights color combinations?? So much confusion when I got to blackxblack in the 'awkward' row.

Anyways, as an artist who loves drawing lolita legs and shoes, I will say that most of the images in the bottom row make my skin crawl. That overlapping... Especially the fourth picture. She only has one leg. The only decent one is the third from left. The rest all have weird overlapping or are just boring as fuck. Top row has much more visually interesting lines and negative space, even if they are kind of awkward.
