Maybe for WV, but there have been a lot of Midnight Crew cosplays that went with the facepaint route and look just fine. It only looks terrible if the cosplayer applies it poorly to begin with, like that image from a few threads ago where they didn't paint their lips.

I think black face paint can work if you highlight it correctly, though I am more of a fan of zentai masks for exiles. Though my favorite Midnight crew cosplays that used face paint opt more for a dark grey and then contour it with a black, so as everyone else has said, if you want to use black I think you can pull it off, you're just going to have to contour your face so it doesn't look strangely flat.

A flat face with a zentai is acceptable, a flat face with paint just looks unnerving.
