I would take apart old clothing of mine and sew it back together to make costumes from some obscure manga I had read. (Note that these creations were always too small since they were cut from clothing that already fit me before being torn apart.)
At the time I didn't know how to access conventions or where they were because the internet was so poor in my rural country home.
Everything was done in secrecy because my family thought manga and costuming was very strange.
After sewing, I would throw everything away or hide things in the back of my closet for fear of my parents seeing it and mocking me and also because it was just plain bad.

tldr;
What I remember the most is trying to make an umbreon tail/ears from black fleece and yellow t-shirt material. The end result was what the tail of an umbreon missing a few chromosomes would look like.
Thank god I had common sense and didn't wear that stuff anywhere. Even for halloween.
