If you take requests you can do initial letters -- download one of those decorative curly fonts, print them out, modge podge them and add them to the books, on both sides or one side. (both sides would make for a cute subtle couples' jewellery, imo.).

Considering what you described is roughly the size of a nail, I'd suggest taking a look at nail stickers, and the beads and things designed to go on nails. If you have the height for it you can try to fit a nail charm into one of the ovals, otherwise stick to stickers and really thin things.
