If you want an easy in, start with Persona 3. Persona 4 is okay, but in my opinion had a pretty different feel from 1-3 in that it was much "lighter"/less grim-dark.
I like Persona but personally prefer the other SMT games.
In my dreams, Will Arnett cosplays Hikawa.

You sound like me, except I really only wear lolita on exams, for presentations, etc. I mostly wear otome or a basic pants/sweater/scarf combo otherwise.

Anyhow, my story:
>have to give presentation on some aspect of pop culture in Japanese class
>choose lolita since it will be the easiest
>wear a simple sweet coord with minimal poof on day of presentation
>sitting outside of classroom, classmates either compliment me or kind of chuckle
>section before mine gets out, people start filing past us
>head of the department, who's 50+ and always dressed to the nines, sees me and squeals, "Anon-san, kawaii!"
>some random, messy looking girl comes out, stops as soon as she sees me, points, and shouts, "Cool dress, but I'd NEVER go out in public like that."
>mfw everyone in the lounge area is now staring at me because she was so loud
>quickly slide into the classroom and give my speech

My professor/the head of my department still talks to me about "Gosurori" every time I go to her office, and unfortunately I recently learned that the girl with no fashion or social skills is probably going on the same study abroad program as me.

I've mostly received compliments/good reactions while out in lolita, though.
