I'm fairly new to sewing, so I'm not exactly sure what a good material for a school girl uniform would be? I'm going to be making Rei's school girl uniform from Evangelion. What materials would you guys recommend using?

There are two cosplays I'd like to do in the future that both involve pinafore dresses (I believe that is the term?) with pleated skirts. They seem pretty simple to make (I'm a beginner), but, most info I seem to be getting is on how to construct a garment that does not quite look like what I'm aiming for. I know one of these characters is very popular (pic related), so, I'd like to hear some advice from people on here. Thanks.
