I've been to a handful of cons across the country, and after two times of going to Youma, I have to say it's pretty good. Lots of cosplay, great game rooms, great guests for the convention size, not too packed like AX or Otakon, people are nice, never had problems with staff.

The biggest negative are with the venue(s). The con is split between the Ren Cen (hotel and convention center) and the Cobo Center (convention center). The Ren Cen is too small to hold all the convention, Cobo doesn't have a hotel attached, and there's no bigger event space in Michigan, so you're stuck walking ten minutes in the rain/in Michigan November chill/in skanky cosplay/in cosplay heels. There's a people mover that will take you from the hotel to Cobo... but to get from Cobo to the hotel, you need to go around the whole people mover track (it only goes one direction). None of this will bother you if you bring a coat and wear sensible shoes (ie. if you don't cosplay) but it's enough of a pain that I wish they had busses. Also the Ren Cen is weird and hard to navigate and the floor lighting is weird for hall photos.

Overall, good con, will go to next year.

Most cons are filled with whatever popular fandom has premade costumes and/or closet cosplay (Hetalia, Homestuck, Adventure Time, MLP) but Youma was over the top with the Tumblritis. Fucking flower crowns.
