I would but one campaign that I attend require that chest armor have front and back plates if they are to yield any hp. Its a 50/50 on costume aesthetics and game practicality for me, I don't want to go around looking like a professional foot soldier while statistically I'm just canon fodder.

Good recommendation though.

Depends on the rules of the campaign, but most times its just heavy infantry in center forming a shield wall or pike wall, and light infantry on flanks. In larger battles you can see people with spears/halberds/pikes or bows support the shield wall at the front.

Most advanced strategy I've seen involves unit maneuvers though, not formations.

Ok, this one isn't exactly a grand battle plan, more of a special operations plan, but whatever.

The thing was, we had a pretty good position for a defense, I'd like more fortifications and some archery towers to really grind out attackers at choke points, but we didn't. Instead we had a bunch of battle horny bastards and some planks, nails and hammers.

We know that the people who typically attacks us don't really pay that much attention to their rear, but its kinda hard to make a timely surprise attack at their rear since they somehow manage to have scouts at their flanks most of the time.

What we came up with was this: a portable bridge that would allow us to sneak over the stream in the woods and appear at their rear for a surprise attack. The enemy rarely sends scouts or any troops on over to the north side of the stream since its impossible to move across it without a bridge, and the northern gate is the most fortified position of the town while the pleb quarter barely has any fortifications. And with the added fact that it lacks a proper walking path, its not very tactical to send troops that way since they would be slowed down heavily if they are armored, and they would be isolated from the other part of the army without any possibility to help or be helped. So you can take for granted that you could hide a major force on the north side without being discovered by the enemy, and then sneak it over the stream as soon as they have crossed and be upon them in an instant, contrary to the risk of hiding a force on the south side which could be easily discovered and compromised .

So in short, the plan is to let the attacker march through the woods, after they have gone past our crossing point, we would bring out the bridge and go over the stream, let them engage our main force at the town in the usual shield wall fashion with broad lines and open backs, and then ram them in the rear.
