one of the main differences between vegetable tanned leather and chrome tanned leather is how they react to water. vegetable tanned leather can be formed while wet and maintin it's shape after it gets dry (also if you use hot water or boil it then it will harden depending on the temperature, and shrink a little too)
chrome tanned leather generally don't give a fuck about water.

About breaking it in, well, try to wear it for a day or too, if it's not comfortable after that then you can figure out some other way

all through the internet. as I said there are a lot of different larp and everyone differs from the others in one way or another, sometimes it's just minor things, sometimes it's two entirely opposite thing.
but you can try searching on facebook for example type in larp and your country or city or whatever and see what you get. You can do this with google too. The whole thing entirely depends on where you live.
There is larping.org too but... let's say that site has very little information on anything
