BTW Asians has been using masonry heaters too. They just preferred to lead fume ducts under the floor and to have big sleeping space on that floor in contrast to Europeans who tended to build more vertical than horizontal structures and have smaller sleeping spaces on them or by them (European peasant stoves often had small space where elderly people were sleeping in the winter, I'm not aware if any palace stoves had sleeping space as part of their design - there are however examples of palace tiled stoves with throne spaces ).

Chinese name for their masonry heaters if I understand correctly is kang. Heaters like that were/are used also outside China.
