Used to be a subculture. Now it's a so-general-it's-almost-useless fashion term with all sorts of assorted shitty communities under its name. Gothic "culture" (and fashion, really) has been bastardized so much that it's just alternative culture. It's supposed to be based around gothic music, but now few goths actually listen to traditional gothic music and just listen to anything alternative/dark/etc- and/or don't make any effort to learn about gothic music at all. The fashion used to be largely dark clothing and victorian/alternative themes, but then shit like cybergoth, pastel goth, etc. infiltrated and permanently ruined the term. There's nothing holding goths together besides the name "goth".
